Test your laboratory acumen against our latest case:
- Signalment:
- 14 years old F/S DSH
- Sample:
- Gallbladder aspirate
- Microscopic Description:
- Gross appearance of fluid is yellow-orange cloudy
and slightly viscous. Total protein concentration is 2.7 gm/dl.
Cellularity of direct smears is high with a majority of intact and
mildly degenerate neutrophils often spread thickly over a stippled
eosinophilic mucinous background. A low number of macrophages and
lymphocytes seen. An occasional aggregate of distorted epithelial cells
or macrophages also noted. Aggregates of yellow material (bile) seen
extracellularly. A low number of neutrophils contain engulfed rod shaped
bacteria and/or cocci. Similar bacteria are noted in the background in
low numbers. Concentrated specimens also contain a low number of
erythrocytes in the background. No atypical cells noted
- Interpertation:
- Gallbladder fluid – septic neutrophilic inflammation
