Microscopic Description:
Gross appearance of fluid is yellow-orange cloudy and slightly viscous. Total protein concentration is 2.7 gm/dl. Cellularity of direct smears is high with a majority of intact and mildly degenerate neutrophils often spread thickly over a stippled eosinophilic mucinous background. A low number of macrophages and lymphocytes seen. An occasional aggregate of distorted epithelial cells or macrophages also noted. Aggregates of yellow material (bile) seen extracellularly. A low number of neutrophils contain engulfed rod shaped bacteria and/or cocci. Similar bacteria are noted in the background in low numbers. Concentrated specimens also contain a low number of erythrocytes in the background. No atypical cells noted
